Our memories define us yet they are susceptible to torment. What we want to see versus what is… Truth versus perception. How do we accept perception as truth but verifying our own memories with recollections of another… when do we begin to make sense for ourselves?
The only consistency in life is inevitable change. Though few accept this universal truth, it has no conscience to decide that fact should affect it… life and change are synonymous. We lose and gain depending on circumstance of life. Depending on the desires of those who hold power in our life, whether they are loved ones we respect or those few individuals holding dominion over the choices we don’t get to make.
Some guide the hands of others with intentional miscommunication and misdirection. Manipulating memories in favor of their personal cause yet, why… can’t they see how hurtful that is? Truth is something so close to us… within our grasp and although we never quite reach it, we should always hold a desire for it. How simple is life within absolute truth; so little confusion, so much simpler when our actions are molded by our unwillingness to lie.
When all of us choose a path for truth, although in this day and age a naïve concept, life becomes a question of what we can do for each other rather than ourselves. It becomes living for our brothers and sisters in an attempt to ensure they understand us, rather than hearing our point. Perhaps the greatest truth is that of our self. Who are we? Where do we find worth… value?
Our interests, when properly fueled, are guided by the core concepts within our minds… the memories not experienced but formed deep within our physical neurology. That of course is not to say the mind cannot accept something it’s forced to experience repetitiously but in this simplification I choose to impart will as the deciding factor. Interest is, after all… what we want.
So many of us assume that family dictates the personal interests of others… perhaps due to our own experience, yet reality is so very different. Within our perception of each other, so many missing pieces and so much confusion, clips and phrases instead of perfect description and that is where we tend to assemble our view of each other. Moreover, there is so much we will never know about the interior of a mind. Of course, within science fiction and technological evolution we could find a glimmer of hope for such an undertaking… let’s stick to present technology.
Among the many storied lives we, as humans, lead, the only one we perceive in its entirety is our own. Perception, however… is flawed. How often do we actually sit within ourselves and study the masterful miracle which is self? How often do we reflect not only on our decisions but the moments which created them? How many days are spent introspectively pondering our personal existence? Introverts should have fun answering that. I know I do.
Curiosity is another interesting concept. We desire knowledge, desire understanding… all of us by nature, desire to know. Aristotle… a magnificent mind dedicated to the considering observations to the deepest possible understanding. Perhaps, one could say he made a life of curiosity. Philosophy is just that in a way. Those things we tend to ignore and choose not to understand, yet accept… philosophy offers an opportunity to observe and understand those parts of ourselves which remain within us, often ignored.
Now, within closing on something perhaps more visited upon in my life than should ever be, I will take a moment to admire the simplicity of an ancient Latin proverb… Magna est veritas et praevalebit. Though I learned the phrase with my father’s assistance regarding pronunciation and a slight discrepancy in translation; “Truth is great and will prevail” rather than “Truth Is mighty and will prevail” this powerful statement has been a meaningful part of my life since my early teens. I’ve had much time to reflect on its meaning… perhaps more time than anyone should be forced to endure.
It happens that while I was spending time in a place called Children’s Home of Detroit, I had access to a journal, a mechanical pencil and a Dictionary among other various books and magazines… this was a subject of heavy contemplation. How can such an ancient proverb have not found its way toward a fundamental understanding in society… the many of us who choose discovery of fact, achieving such wondrous scientific marvels and reaching further beyond our present endeavors… how could we not have realized through the repetition of history that truth is not a matter of perspective and society as a whole could benefit from accepting its indelible existence.
Truth simplifies life. Truth offers us solace and comforts us when we’re met with an obstacle. So many phrases we use to remind ourselves to move on such as, “It is what it is” and “such is life” are rooted conceptually in universal truth. Yet, as a species… we are creative and so sad as well, we are often selfish. While it’s the selfishness which blinds us to compassion, that selfishness still prevents us from understanding how forgiving people can be. “We’re all human”
“People are people” and there’s no changing that… we’re born as a collective consciousness, a species which is the sum of all parts… black, white, male, female and everything in between. We all strive to become something, to mean something in this world. Culture and location often decide how we are, yet it’s our personal truths which guide who we are. Their prevalence, known only to us… these solitary shells deciding whether to share or conceal them… We mean to be more than what we are, yet often forget and sometimes fail to realize, all that takes is honesty… for honesty affords us friendship.
